General information

IUFRO Tree Biotechnology Conference

The IUFRO (International Union of Forestry Research Organizations) Tree Biotechnology biannual conference has established a solid tradition for over 20 years as the official meeting of the IUFRO working group 2.04.06 – Molecular biology of forest trees. The most recent meetings were held in Whistler (Canada), Azores (Portugal); Pretoria (South Africa); Umea (Sweden); Skamania (USA) and Oxford (England).

This conference has convened scientists and foresters interested in the basic genetics, molecular biology and physiology of forest trees, and the application of this knowledge to tree improvement and conservation. The Tree Biotechnology Conference has undoubtedly been the premiere international forum where the most cutting edge research in tree biotechnology developed both in academia and industry is presented.

Conference Theme

IUFRO Tree Biotechnology 2011: From genomes to integration and delivery

Conference Date

June 26 (Sunday) (starting with afternoon registrations and an evening opening lecture and reception)

to

July 2 (Saturday) (ending at noon), 2011

Conference Venue

The Conference will take place at the Convention Center of the Ecoresort Arraial d'Ajuda (http://www.arraialresort.com). Arraial d'Ajuda is district of Porto Seguro. It is a small and very charming town, founded by hippies in the 70´s. Besides its wonderful beaches, and a vibrant night life, Arraial d' Ajuda is a top destination for extreme sports and ecotourism.

To get to Arraial d' Ajuda you will fly into Porto Seguro International Airport (airport code BPS). Porto Seguro is served by several daily flights from the main capitals of Brazil which in turn receive flights from all over the world. From the Porto Seguro airport you can catch a taxi for a few dollars or even walk to the ferry boat (4 km) that will then take you to Arraial d' Ajuda (please see Conference Venue and Travel and Visa Information for more details).

Tree Biotech 2011: science, social and field

The conference will provide an exceptional mix of science, social activities and field exploration. We are inviting some of the top international scientists to share their latest results and vision on biotechnology and related fields. We are strongly encouraging both oral and poster presentations from a breadth of the international tree research community, including junior researchers as well as graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

In a full day technical field trip, delegates will have a chance to visit Veracel’s Eucalyptus clonal forest operations, progeny and clonal trials, the micro-cutting nursery, its outstanding Atlantic Forest Biodiversity Station and pass by its modern 1.2 M tons/yr pulp mill, all of them very close, in a 50 km range from the conference venue.

Last, but by no means least, besides the wonderful beaches, we plan for an appealing social program built upon the amazing musical and dancing traditions of Bahia to provide a very relaxed and informal environment to help foster very productive scientific interactions.

Who should attend

Academic, government, and industry research scientists; graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; policy makers and public servants.

Official conference language

English. As the IUFRO Tree Biotechnology is an international Conference all sessions will be held only in English. At this moment we are not planning for simultaneous translation to Portuguese. However, depending on funding availability we will be glad to have it.
