Post-conference publications
It is the intention of the conference organizers to capture the content of the IUFRO Tree Biotechnology Conference 2011 in two independent and complementary ways. Initially, all accepted abstracts will be published into BMC Proceedings, an open access online journal publishing proceedings from conferences and collections of meeting abstracts. Furthermore, all invited speakers, papers selected for oral presentation and outstanding poster presentations selected at the Conference will be invited to submit a manuscript for peer-review aiming at a publication into "Genetics and Molecular Biology" the official Journal of the Brazilian Genetics Society.
Publication of Conference Abstracts into BMC Proceedings
All accepted abstracts of papers presented at the Conference will be published in a specific 2011 supplement of BMC Proceedings. The idea behind this publication is to generate a better “memory” of this IUFRO Conference and possibly encourage a similar initiative in future editions.
Although the abstracts do not get indexed by author, they will be fully accessible and referable. Such a publication should recollect the IUFRO conference in a more consistent way, give a better value to the effort made by everyone in preparing the abstracts and presenting the papers. You can check an example of a recently published abstract proceedings in BMC Proceedings at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/issues/193250/
Abstracts will be organized into three categories: Lecture presentations (invited speakers), Oral presentations (abstracts selected for oral presentation) and Poster presentations. Such a supplement gets indexed by PubMed central with a single d.o.i (digital object identifier) and all abstracts are posted and accessible through Pubmed central and the BMC Proceedings webpage.
The plan is to have all the abstracts finally formatted and ready to be sent to BMC by early June. With such a schedule, the BMC Proceedings issue will come online after the meeting, by the end of July. For the meeting we will however provide a downloadable pdf in the conference webpage and the conventional CD or pen-drive with the abstracts. Some minor additional formatting requirements for the BMC publication do exist and will be informed to all authors in the next few weeks. The abstract submission system will remain open as needed to allow for everyone to make such formatting adjustments.
A concern might arise regarding potential issues with the information contained in the abstracts that could jeopardize a later publication as a full paper. Authors should manage such issues by including sufficient information for an abstract but leaving out more sensitive details or final conclusions that would later be published in a full paper. Alternatively, authors will have the choice of not having their abstracts included in the BMC Proceedings publication by contacting the Conference organizing committee.
Finally, the conference organization has been able to secure funding through competitive grants for this publication. Authors will therefore not incur in any additional cost for publishing their abstract into BMC Proceedings besides their conference registration.
Full length papers
All invited speakers, papers selected for oral presentation and outstanding poster presentations selected at the Conference will be invited to submit a manuscript for a post-conference publication into "Genetics and Molecular Biology" (http://www.gmb.org.br/) the on-line, open-access, peer-reviewed official Journal of the Brazilian Genetics Society (indexed in Web of Science and, starting in 2011, also in Pubmed and Pubmed Central).
Some papers will report experimental results while for the invited speakers a short review paper will usually be more appropriate. Publication in GMB will not jeopardize authors from publishing, at a later stage, a full length paper elsewhere if they so intend.
Papers invited for a submission to GMB, will submit the full manuscript after the Conference by August 30, 2011 on-line through the journal website that uses the ScholarOne submisison and review system. No English revision will be made. If the language is considered inadequate, requiring major corrections the scientific committee reserves the right to reject the submission.
Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by at least two committee members and external reviewers when deemed necessary. If accepted, peer-reviews will be returned to the authors for final corrections and preparation of the final manuscript for publication. All this process will be done on-line through the GMB site.
Once a paper has been finally accepted, the contact will then be directly with the GMB editorial office. The authors will be responsible for a final manuscript and references formatting, following the instructions for authors that can be downloaded from the GMB website
Galley proofs will be sent in pdf format by GMB via e-mail for final revision. All authors are co-responsible for their submissions and they should make every effort to check the paper before this final step to avoid costly reformatting and possible introduction of new errors. The corresponding author will be required to sign and return a copyright form to the journal. No fees for paper publication are charged by GMB.
