Brazil welcomes you to the IUFRO Tree Biotechnology Conference 2011
Forest trees have unquestionably entered the genomic era. The updated Poplar genome, the upcoming Eucalyptus genome and the concerted efforts towards a conifer genome sequence, are increasingly fueling a multitude of studies and applications both in sustainable forest production and conservation. Time calls for integration with an increased sense of urgency for delivery of effective biotechnologies.
“From genomes to integration and delivery”, this is the theme of the 2011 edition of the Tree Biotechnology Conference. The scientific sessions will highlight current advances in genetics, physiology, molecular breeding, wood development and 'omics technologies applied to forest trees. Discussions on hot issues such as GM trees, biosafety and the overall value of biotechnology will also be addressed. We are inviting some of the top international scientists to share their results and vision on tree biotechnology. Likewise we strongly encourage presentations from a breadth of the international tree research community.
We are thrilled to invite you to come down to the dazzling beaches of Bahia State in Arraial d’Ajuda, a district of the city of Porto Seguro. Not only is it a key historical site where Brazil was “discovered” by the Portuguese navigators back in 1500, but it is next door to some of the most productive plantation forest sites on earth with clonal eucalypts growing at 70 m3/ha/yr.
The IUFRO Tree Biotechnology Conference 2011 will be hosted jointly by EMBRAPA (Brazilian Corporation of Agricultural Research), the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology and the forest company Veracel Celulose. The organizing committee is working in advance to secure both governmental and industrial sponsorships to facilitate the broadest participation possible at this meeting, first time to be held in South America.
Last but by no means least, besides the wonderful beaches and charming nightlife of Arraial d’Ajuda we are planning for an appealing social program built upon the amazing musical and dancing traditions of Bahia to provide a very relaxed and informal environment to help foster productive scientific interactions.
The conference will definitely provide an exceptional mix of science, social activities and field exploration. You don't want to miss this meeting! So mark on your 2011 agenda, June 26 to July 2nd 2011, join the mailing list in this webpage and stay tuned to registration opening and paper submission dates.
We look forward to welcoming you in person!
Dario Grattapaglia - Conference Chair
